EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) therapy is an advanced psychotherapy which is proven to be helpful for a wide range of issues. Most widely known for its use in cases of trauma, it is also helpful for anxiety, depression, phobias and much more. It is approved and endorsed by professional organisations including NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence); the WHO (World Health Organisation); The International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies; and the NHS.
The EMDR approach recognizes that, when a person has a negative experience, the brain can sometimes be so overwhelmed that it is unable to process the experience properly. This means that the memory becomes stuck. When this happens, the person can re-experience the intense emotions and distress which happened in the original event. EMDR helps the brain to fully process the negative experience so that it is no longer stuck, meaning that the person no longer experiences the intense emotions when thinking about the original event.
EMDR also offers ways of working with issues without you fully verbalizing details of the issue if needed. If required, this can be discussed in session.
EMDR therapy helps with anxiety as it helps to identify the source of your anxiety (this may be a past, current or future event), before helping your brain to properly process the issue. This helps to stop that undesired emotional response. During therapy you will also develop coping techniques to help you moving forward. When we experience anxiety, we may not always understand where the issue is coming from. EMDR sessions help you to target the underlying cause of your anxiety before helping your brain to process it.
Although the therapy is called eye movement desensitization reprocessing, the movement actually refers to bilateral stimulation. This means that in sessions you may be guided to follow certain eye movements, however, you may also use audio (beeps) or you may use tapping. You will be guided by your therapist all the way.
EMDR can be used on its own, or we can incorporate other approaches into your therapy plan such as mindfulness or Nature-guided therapy. I tailor all treatment plans to you.
